Righteous Among the Nations
In Switzerland

As Swiss Vice-Consul in Budapest, Hungary from 1942 to 1945, Lutz is credited with saving over 60,000 Hungarian Jews, most likely more than any other individual during the Holocaust. He invented the Schutzbrief (protective letter), issuing tens of thousands of documents to provide Jews with Swiss protection, and established 76 safe houses in Budapest. Working with his wife, Gertrud Lutz, also honored as Righteous Among the Nations, he negotiated with Nazi and Hungarian authorities to halt deportations. His efforts were recognized by Yad Vashem in 1964, marking him as the first Swiss national to receive this honor.

A Swiss border police commander in St. Gallen, Grüninger defied orders from August 1938 to April 1939 by allowing approximately 3,600 Jewish refugees to enter Switzerland illegally, falsifying documents to indicate they arrived before border restrictions tightened. He also provided clothing and aid to refugees, setting up a camp near Diepoldsau. His actions led to his dismissal, a criminal trial, fines, and loss of pension, but he never regretted his choices, stating they were a matter of saving lives. Yad Vashem recognized him as Righteous Among the Nations in 1971, and his conviction was annulled in 1992.
